Walrus refugees

I came across this news on a webpage recently and I think that this is a real and serious issue of global warming that I should share.

Here is the link in case anyone cannot see the video posted above: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DURZNgDHL1g

Walruses require floating ice as resting points between their dives to find food, and in summer, when ice melts, walruses go ashore onto nearby islands. Over the years, global warming diminishes the amount of floating ice available for walruses as ice are melting faster than they form. This September, about 35 000 walruses were spotted on a beach in northwest Alaska 700 miles northwest of Anchorage, in Point Lay largely due to the loss of Arctic sea ice. This, being the largest number of walruses seen in Alaska, signifies that there is a huge change in our climate that will affect wildlife that depends heavily on sea ice. There is nothing much human can do to specifically solve the sea ice problem but local communities can reduce disturbances on the shore. The World Wildlife Fund is also concerned about potential of an oil spill especially in the Arctic Ocean because the technology at the moment is still unable to contain an oil spill if it were to happen, and Arctic Ocean is not only a key habitat for many marine animals but also very important to the local communities living in that area.

This large number of walruses is at risk of losing their homeland, and not to forget other animals such as polar bears are also facing the same threat of depleting Arctic sea ice. Hence, effects of global warming and climate change are hitting us fast and by the time these effects are felt, such as the melting ice, there is nothing much we can do to freeze the water into ice. Therefore, it is really important to reduce carbon emission and reduce global warming so that these animals in the Arctic are able to continue living happily.
